Background

The Controlled Vehicular Access (CVA) system in Valletta, which was launched on the 1st of May 2007 forms an integral part of the Maltese Government’s commitment to increase accessibility in our Capital City. The requirement stems from a wide consensus ranging from residents to non residents, and from business owners based in Valletta to their potential customers, that the City is a highly traffic congested zone – a fact that has negative repercussions to the public in general, to the environment, and to business activity.

Controlled Vehicular Access is a tried and tested system that is in operation in a number of major cities across Europe as well as in other parts of the world.

How The System Works - Overview

Controlled Vehicular Access makes use of Automatic Number Plate Reading (ANPR) technology and dedicated camera systems to monitor and photograph vehicles entering and exiting the CVA boundary.

The system then automatically calculates the time the vehicle remained inside the Valletta CVA boundary and finally computes the fee due for access and parking based on the tariffs issued by Transport Malta.

Although bills are regularly sent by post vehicle owners have the possibility to check their CVA account status by either contacting the CVA helpdesk centre or by logging into the relevant section on this site.

Once confirmed, payment for access and parking in Valletta can be effected by post, over the internet and via authorised bank standing order.

Pre payment incentives and penalties for late payment apply. Kindly visit the access tariffs and penalties section for further details.
